PE Challenge Task

There are useful books in the library that can help you with this task.  Look for books with the following Dewey numbers.

  • 612 for books on exercise 
  • 613 for books on diet and nutrition
  • 641 for books on food, recipes and labelling
  • 796 for books on sports and exercise

You can use the books in the library before and after school, and at breaktimes.  You can borrow any book from the library to help you with your work, but only for one night.  This is so that everyone gets a chance to use all the books.

Healthy Lifestyle

Fitness from BBC Health has lots of links to information including choosing what exercise is best for you, how to prevent injuries and specific advice for children and young people.

Healthy eating from Directgov outlines what is meant by a healthy diet and suggests how you can change some bad habits.

Is your lifestyle healthy? from Food fitness has a great online quiz you can take that assesses how healthy you are and suggests ways to improve your diet and activeness.

Keeping fit from Directgov outlines some of the benefits of exercise and suggests activities.

Nutrition basics from the British Nutrition Foundation has lots of information that will help you in this task.  Use the links on the left hand side of the page to find what you’re looking for.

Short term and long term effects of exercise – these webpages from Blakeston School in Stockton are useful to identify the effects of exercise.

Diet and nutrition – although this webpage is from the Open University, it starts with a useful summary of what a balanced diet is.

Diet and nutrition from Bupa explains about healthy eating, weight control and balanced diets.

Nutrition from BBC GCSE Bitesize has an excellent table which outlines the 7 components of a balanced diet, which you will find useful for the first part of this challenge.

Nutrition from BBC Health has links to information about healthy eating and the different requirements of different people.

MusclesAsk Mrs Smith in the library to use her posters on the human body that list different muscles, as well as bones, nerves and much more!  You will find lots of books on the human body in the library.  They will have a Dewey number of 612.  You may need to look in the contents or index pages to find the information on muscles.

 

The Body from BBC Science and Nature has lots of information on different areas of the body with some games to help you learn too.

How muscles work from How Stuff Works is a good source of information.

Muscles and movement from BBC GCSE Bitesize has lots of information to help you with Challenge 3.  Use the links to each of the five pages to access it all.
